6 Day Savannah & Atlanta Escape by Rail
March 23 – March 28, 2013
Day 1: Your train to Atlanta arrives in Atlanta at 7:30 pm. Your motor coach will be waiting to take you to your overnight accommodations at the Doubletree in Atlanta.
Day 2: After breakfast we depart at 8:00 am by motor coach to arrive in Savannah for lunchtime. Our first stop will be Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House where dish after dish of southern cooking is brought to your table and served family style. Everything from homemade soup to dessert will be brought to you to enjoy, if you want more of anything just ask. After lunch visit the Juliet Lows home (founder of the Girl Scouts), .A stop will be made with a visit to the Savannah candy factory before checking into our hotel, the Best Western Historic district. Breakfast and Lunch
Day 3: The day begins with a historic tour of Savannah. Learn the history of Savannah and why Savannah was saved in Sherman’s march to the sea during the War Between the States. Discover how and why Savannah was laid out in a grid pattern with Parks and Squares and see where scenes from Forest Gump were filmed. Your local guide will tell you the stories and scandals that are all part of Savannah History. You are sure to enjoy a visit to the Byrd cookie factory where unlimited samples of these yummy cookies will be available. This afternoon you will have the opportunity to discover the City Market Place and perhaps take a horse drawn carriage ride. For those not interested in visiting the City Market Place arrangements to visit Savannas oldest African American church will be made. Tonight we will feature a performance at the Savanna Theater followed by a stop at Leopold’s for ice-cream. Breakfast and Dinner
Day 4: Our first stop this morning is Ft Jackson where you will learn what is what like to be in the military during the Civil War. Discover why soldiers often died after visiting a doctor rather then being cured. Learn about communications during the 1860’s, watch a civil war cannon being loaded and fired. It is on to historic Tybee Island where we will take a cruise with the hope of spotting dolphins playing. For those that would like to climb the stairs to the lighthouse you will discover a panoramic view. On our return trip to Savannah we will stop at Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House for a traditional low country boil, shrimp, scallop, or oyster dinner. Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House has been used as the setting for many of Paula Dean’s shows. Breakfast and Dinner
Day 5: We depart Savannah for Atlanta arriving at at the Pemberton Café for lunch (on own) After lunch visit the World of Coke where the number of flavors Coca Cola produces will surprise you, and discover how the flavors are adjusted for different regions of the world. In the afternoon visit the CNN Center, world headquarters of the international news channel, offers an inside look at news production. The studio tour includes listening in on the station's control room – complete with real-time direction – an explanation of technology used (including "blue screen") and watching a newscast as it occurs. An added bonus: a ride on the world's longest freestanding escalator, which starts the tour. Tonight we feature a farewell dinner where you can say goodbye to your new friends. Breakfast and dinner
Day 6: Transfer to the train station for 8 am departure. Breakfast
